This convergence has led to the transmission and reception of the text, video and image data from one electronic device to the other. These data transfers can occur between computers, mobiles, TVs and other ‘smart' devices facilitating multi-functional and multi-feature product creation. The convergence of information, communication and entertainment technologies has revolutionized all three of them.
5.Wireless technology making headway: Satellites and the signal transmission and reception devices have created a wireless world around us. Satellites have also led to the utilization of certain technologies for civilian use. Some of the uses like remote sensing and prospecting for resources or surveillance activities have been of use to researchers, scientists and other limited categories of people, the use of some like satellite navigation systems (or, sat nav, in short) has been more widespread among the civilians. New Technologies for Preventing Workplace Burn Injuries

The Problem

Heat burns and scalds lead the way in workplace injuries that result in lost time from work, costing a median of 5 lost days per incident (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Publication No. 2004 -146). The economic impact to employers and employees alike can be overwhelming. A recent study conducted in Oregon State suggested the average cost in that state for burn injuries is US$5,400 per incident!

A major burn hazard is found in industrial plants that utilize steam process lines. In many typical applications hot steam lines are initially covered with a permanent fixture of hard lagging and mineral wool insulation. As plant processes evolve or if system problems occur, sections of insulation are removed for troubleshooting, pipe replacement or line reconfiguration. The insulation around these sections is usually irreparably damaged in the process. Since replacing these small sections can be cost prohibitive, it is often not replaced thereby creating a potential burn hazard.

A second major burn hazard occurs at high temperature flexible hoses that are connected to moving machinery or equipment. Traditional hard lagging insulating technologies, being inflexible, are not capable of servicing these hoses. The result is that the hoses are left un-insulated, creating a potential burn hazard for personnel who service or operate adjacent equipment.

These scenarios represent just two of literally thousands of common situations where the potential for a serious workplace burn injury exists.

The Solution

Recent advancements in thermal protection technologies are allowing insulation providers to utilize closed cell silicone sponge rubber materials to create a wrap for protecting hot process lines. Unlike traditional mineral wool, the sponge wrap system does not require a hard lagging to contain the insulation material. It is extremely flexible and may be cut to length with an ordinary pair of scissors, allowing for easy installation by in house maintenance staff.

In many cases the insulation wrap is equipped with a hook and loop closure to simplify its installation on existing lines, and to provide easy access for maintenance procedures or trouble-shooting activities.

The Technology

This new technology takes advantage of the very low thermal conductivity and high temperature resistance of closed cell silicone sponge rubber.  Unlike traditional insulation products (consisting of fibrous materials and hard outer cladding) silicone sponge rubber wrap is easy to install without a professional contractor, making it a cost effective technology well suited for covering a variety of potential burn surfaces.

The closed cellular nature of the silicone sponge rubber does not allow for water or other liquids to wick through the insulation medium. This enables the material to function just as effectively outside, when exposed to rain and other elements, as inside the plant.

With a minimal capital investment a typical plant can be equipped with silicone sponge burn protection to significantly reduce the risk of workplace injuries.  As an added bonus, protecting un-insulated pipes will lead to a reduction in energy costs.

3m Announces Launch of New Technology

3M has been a leader in its class for years now and it has done so by developing and manufacturing products which will be very useful for consumers.  Recently, the company's subsidiary, 3M Touch Systems Inc., announced that they have launched the MicroTouch Flex Capacitive Touch Sensors in the United States market.

The said product is a polyester-based capacitive touch screen which can be used on electronic products such as personal navigation systems.  Navigation systems are widely used today in the auto industry and the launch of the new technology is expected to make modern navigational system more efficient and convenient to use.

Chris Tsourides, Mobile Products Business Unit Manager at 3M, had this to say:  "We are very excited to provide the mobile handheld industry with a high-performance touch screen solution that will enhance its product offering and brand image.  With global demand exploding for touch-enabled mobile devices, 3M’s high-volume roll form production of MicroTouch Flex Capacitive Touch Sensors should help address the increasing demand for touch screen sensors."

According to The Auto Channel, the new product from 3M is the result of applying Indium Tin Oxide patterns on polyester film.  The latter is designed to be lightweight thus making it cost effective.  The resulting product is a lightweight touch sensor which can contain as much as 72,000 sensors.  That amount though depends on the size of the screen.

Kelly Devin, Flex Capacitive Business Development Manager with 3m Touch Systems, had this to say:  "Since Flex Capacitive Sensors are manufactured through a continuous, roll form production process, this helps device manufacturers manage their component supply chain from the prototype phase to pilot scale and full scale-up.  Our ability to produce touch sensors on rolls means our customer scan get the quantities they need when they need them."

"A film-based sensor like Flex Capacitive allows product designers to explore new and unique industrial designs beyond the limitations of traditional square or rectangular touch sensor shapes," added Devin.  "As personal mobile devices continue to converge, touch sensor design freedom helps provide product manufacturers a greater ability to differentiate their products."

The advantages of using 3M's new technology will surely be taken into consideration by automakers and auto parts manufacturers especially electronic ones.  Although navigational systems are not yet as important to a motorist as Acura engine parts, they are becoming more and more attractive to consumers.  This means that in the near future, this product by 3M will be used on most vehicles.

The car hire industry has long been viewed as somewhat of a dinosaur in terms of technological development and implementation. Many will remember booking a hire car for their holiday only to find a spluttering little 'box on wheels' that is just as likely to break down than get you from A to B. Things are changing however, the industry has recognised the importance of providing quality car hire options for travellers. 
A major influence on the car hire industry has been the increasing concerns over global warming and the effect we are having upon the planet. Through more efficient technologies the industry has been striving to produce rental options that will appeal to customers with an environmental conscience. This is not all car hire firms; many have not taken environmental concerns on board, but there are a number of companies who are actively changing the way they operate to meet the demands of the ever-growing environmentally friendly market.
Most obviously car hire companies can adopt an eco-friendly strategy that involves the introduction of hybrid cars in rental fleets. Whilst these cars are definitely the right way to go, many commentators have criticised this as a half measure and questioned the viability of hybrid cars as a long term solution to the problem of emissions. There are also the effects that hybrid cars using bio-fuels are having on wheat production and the cost of wheat worldwide. With a limit on good arable land it is unsurprising that many have questioned the logic of using foodstuffs as a major fuel, surely at some point a Malthusian standpoint must be taken and the resources at our disposal must be measured efficiently.
Other technologies introduced by some forward thinking car hire companies are a changing in the way rates are applied. For instance some companies have started to charge on an hourly rather than daily basis. This means that a customer who only has to drive a short distance, for instance to pick up their own car, only needs to hire the car for an hour. While the company may well lose some profits, it is possible to reduce the time any car spends on the road with this method and hence reduce both congestion and emissions.
Car hire companies are also rapidly introducing black box recorders to their fleets. This is a technology that through GPS tracking can ascertain where a car is at any one moment. This is a strategy that hopes to limit the amount of cars lost to theft whilst also picking up on customers who break speeding regulations whilst hiring a car. This is essentially a protective measure to ensure that car hire fleets remain in good condition and are not damaged by excessive driving. It does however raise a privacy argument as nobody really appreciates having a company know of their whereabouts at all times.
Another protective measure introduced by car hire companies has been the recording of biometric data from customers. In collaboration with local police forces, procedures are now in place at many desks to record a thumbprint of a customer ensuring an electronic record is taken of their details. This has predominantly been a response to high numbers of thefts by organised crime syndicates who use false documents to hire cars. The recording of thumbprints means that if a theft does occur it is possible to hand over the information to the police and speed up any tracing procedures.
The introduction of technology in the car hire industry can be seen as a twofold approach. Firstly the industry is trying to move away from the gas guzzling image for a more eco-friendly perspective. The second approach is utilising new technologies to safeguard fleets. With firms increasingly being targeted by organised criminals this is an unsurprising development to protect their investments. New technology will hopefully lead to an industry that is both secure for the firms and also friendly to the environment.

It used to be that cable TV was the technology of choice for getting TV programming.  This was true even with the early availability of satellite TV, but satellite TV at the time was too expensive for most people to afford, and even those who could afford it still had to contend with the massive satellite dishes that the technology of the time required.

By the first half of the nineteen nineties, the situation changed with the introduction of new satellite TV technology that provided a much needed improvement upon both the satellite TV  that came before it as well as cable TV.  This new wave of satellite TV technology required only a small satellite dish that was three feet across at the most rather than the older monstrosities that were over ten feet across.  At the same time, the new technology enabled satellite TV technology to deliver more channels at very reasonable prices.

The exodus of TV viewers leaving cable TV in favor of satellite TV started because of the realization that spending about the same amount of money on satellite TV that they had been paying for cable TV could provide those viewers with a much larger selection of channels.  The fact that the satellite dishes were so much smaller and therefore more manageable also made a huge difference when it came to making satellite TV a realistic alternative for suburbanites who hadn't had room for the older dishes.  The cable TV company made its own situation worse by dismissing the extra channels as lower quality than what cable TV provided and therefore not interesting to viewers.  What the cable industry didn't take into account was that viewers like having more choices and if they could spend the same amount of money that their cable TV subscription had cost on a service that offered about three times the number of channels, all of those extra channels were essentially free. In short, nobody but the cable TV industry cared whether or not the extra channels offered by the satellite TV industry were of decent quality because they were essentially free.

Now the cable TV industry is finally implementing technology that could turn the tables in the other direction.  This technology is called switched digital video.  Switched digital video essentially increases the number of separate channels that a cable TV provider can offer by making better use of existing cable TV bandwidth.  Right now cable TV providers simply send out all of their channels all at once to all of their subscribers.  The digital receivers of the subscribers then filter out those channels.  The channels that aren't part of the subscription are filtered out first, and then all of the channels that the subscriber doesn't want to watch at a given time are filtered out.  This means that even though the cable TV company may be transmitting hundreds of channels over a cable- and taking up most, if not all, of the cable's bandwidth- any given viewer is only watching one of those channels at a time. Switched digital video allows the cable TV company to deliver just the channel that a viewer wants to watch at any given time.  This means that the company can provide a virtually unlimited number of channels.

Switched digital video may be just the technology that the cable TV industry needs to bring customers back from satellite TV.

Blogging is hot one day, passe the next. You Tube is the place you want to be -- unless you don't want to be there, of course!

How is a Nichepreneur to make any sense of it all? How do you identify what tools are best to promote your products and services and which are destined to be no more than a flash in the pan phenomenon, long on promise and short on follow-through?

More importantly, how are you going to find the time to figure it all out? When you're busy running your business, finding the hours needed to learn about a new technology can be challenging enough -- spending all of that time and energy only to discover that something is really not for you is a frustration you don't need!

Save time and minimize frustration by adopting this six step process for approaching new technology. Followed consistently, this process will allow you to identify viable promotion opportunities, discern which ones appear to have sticking power, streamline the learning process, and adopt best practices right from day one!

Step One: Don't Believe the Hype

Enthusiastic, cheerleading-style articles touting the latest tech tool as the solution to all of your marketing challenges are fun to read -- but they seldom provide enough information to make a solid business decision!

Find a community you're comfortable with -- this might require a few minutes with Google -- and ask questions. This is often the quickest way to find information and, as an added bonus, start forming relationships with potential colleagues, clients, and peers.
